FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

How does your training and experience differ from other clinicians?

Dr. Stiede is a doctoral-level clinician with an extensive training background. He completed a 5-year graduate program in clinical psychology under the direction of Dr. Doug Woods at Marquette University. He also completed a 1-year American Psychological Association (APA) accredited clinical internship in the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Clinic at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, under the direction of Dr. Eric Storch. After earning his Ph.D., he stayed at Baylor College of Medicine to complete a postdoctoral fellowship that included advanced training in treatment of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive related disorders. Additionally, Dr. Stiede has experience conducting research to help understand, improve, and disseminate treatment for Tourette’s syndrome, OCD, anxiety disorders, and trichotillomania. He has collaborated with universities and businesses as a site coordinator for multiple NIH-funded studies of behavioral treatments for tics and trichotillomania. Further, he has received research funding, served as a peer-reviewer for research journals, and mentored and trained undergraduate and graduate research assistants. Through his research efforts, Dr. Stiede has co-authored 26 peer-reviewed articles, 5 book chapters, and co-edited one book. He continues to expand his knowledge through his current clinical work, collaboration with colleagues, and regular review of psychology journals to stay current with advances in research and practice.

Do you accept insurance?

The Milwaukee Anxiety Center is not in-network with any insurance plans and are considered an out-of-network provider. That said, many patients with insurance are still able to receive partial reimbursement for services. If you choose to seek reimbursement, we can provide a “superbill” with the necessary documentation for you to submit to your insurance company. A superbill is an itemized form used by healthcare providers for reflecting rendered services, and it can be submitted to payers (insurance companies, funds, programs) for reimbursement. Because there are few providers that treat Tourette’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive related disorders, some patients receive in network benefits from their insurance companies for this service. We recommend contacting your insurer directly to better understand your out-of-network benefits and potential reimbursement.

Why don't you take insurance?

Many clinicians with advanced training share concerns that insurance reimbursement often does not adequately reflect the level of expertise and time required to provide high-quality care. In many cases, reimbursement rates are similar across different types of mental health providers, without accounting for the extensive training (often 5+ years) completed by psychologists. We recognize that this can create barriers to access, which is a broader issue the field continues to address through advocacy and systemic change.

By remaining out-of-network, we are able to base treatment recommendations on clinical judgment and your individual needs, rather than insurance requirements or limitations. Some patients also prefer not to involve insurance in order to maintain greater privacy. Additionally, because we are not managing ongoing insurance-related administrative tasks, we are able to dedicate more time and attention to patient care.

Do you provide services via telehealth?

Dr. Stiede offers treatment via telehealth/videoconferencing. Patients can choose to be seen exclusively via telehealth or a combination between telehealth and in-person treatment. Wisconsin is also a member of PsyPact, which is an interstate compact that allows telepsychology across state lines. Dr. Stiede is a PsyPact provider, which allows him to provide telehealth services in all 43 participating states and territories. Here is a site that shows a map of the participating states: https://psypact.org/mpage/psypactmap.

No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate Notice

All patients have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” outlining the expected cost of their health care services. For self-pay individuals, providers are required to supply an estimate for medical items and services. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 higher than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the charge. At the Milwaukee Anxiety Center, a Good Faith Estimate will be included with your intake paperwork for your reference; no signature is required.
